赤ちゃんが生まれて初めて迎えるお正月を初正月といいます。
その際に赤ちゃんの祖父母や親せき、両親の兄弟、仲人、友人などが、女の子には羽子板を、男の子には破魔弓を贈ってお祝いする習慣が古くからあります。

羽子板で突く羽根の玉、あの黒くて堅い玉は「むくろじ」という大木の種です。
この″むくろじ〟は、漢字で「無患子」と書きます。「子が患わ無い」という意味です。
つまり羽子板は赤ちゃんの無病息災のお守りなのです。
また、羽子板の羽根がトンボに似ていることから、蚊を食べるトンボ、つまり蚊は羽根を恐れるため、ひいては子が蚊に刺されないようにという、同じような無病息災の意味ももっています。

読んで字の如し、ずばり魔よけ、つまり厄払いのお守りです。
弓で射るマトのことを昔はハマといっていました。そのハマに破魔の字を当てたことが、この飾りの由来です。
似たようなものに初詣の際に神社から授かる破魔矢や、新築の上棟式の際に鬼門の方角に向けて棟の上に立てる破魔矢があります。

ともに古来からの行事であった正月の年占いや厄落としがその始まりです。
男の子が弓と矢でマトを射てその年の占いをしたのが破魔弓の起源であり、女の子が正月に羽根を突いて、その年の厄落としをしたのが羽子板の最初であるといわれています。

The first new year after a baby was born is called 「hatsu-shogatsu」(Hatsu means first and shogatsu means new year.)
There is an old tradition to celebrate this childbirth by grandparents and relatives as well as the parents' brothers and sisters, nakodo(go-between) and friends sending hagoita (a wooden shuttlecock paddle) to a baby girl and hamayumi (exorcism bow and arrow originating from a Shinto ritual notarms) to a baby boy at that time.

Hagoita is used in hanetsuki, a traditional girls' game for New Year's played by one or two persons. The hagoita hits a shuttlecock called a hane made of black hardball-shaped soapberry seeds and feathers. The soapberry is called 「mukuroji」in Japanese, written with characters meaning「a child not suffering from illness.」Inshort, hagoita is a good-luck charm to insure the sound health of the baby.
In addition, the hane resembles the dragonfly which eats mosquitoes.Therefore, as mosquitoes are afraid of the hane, hagoita have the additional meaning of protection for the baby from mosquitoes.

Originally a target shot at by a bow (yumi) was called hama, which is now writtenwith characters meaning「to repel evil spirits. Therefore, the name, hamayumi, represents a good- luck charm to avoid misfortune. Similarly ,hamaya (ya means arrow) are gifts from a shrine when making the first visit of the year (hatsumode). Another type of hamaya is set up on the ridge in the direction of the「demon gate」at the ceremony of putting up the ridge-beam when newly built a house.

Both hagoita and hamayumi originated form yearly fortune-telling and expellingbad luck which are the traditonal events during the New Year since ancient times.
It is said that the origin of hamaya is that a boy told a fortune for the year by shooting a target with a bow and arrow and the beginning of hagoita is that a girl expelled her had luck by hitting the hane.

初正月的意思是刚出生的婴儿第一次迎接正月。
在那个时候婴儿的祖父母以及亲戚,双亲的兄弟,介绍人,朋友为了祝贺婴儿的出生，女孩子赠送毽球板，男孩子赠送破魔弓（驱妖箭），这种风俗习惯很早以前就有。

羽毛球的球是用「无患子」的名字的木头作的。
「无患子」的意思是保护孩子无病无灾。
也就是说,毽球板是婴儿健康的护身符。
还有，羽毛表示蜻蜓, 因为蜻蜓吃蚊子，所以蚊子怕羽毛，孩子不被蚊子叮，相似无病无灾的意思。

看字的本身意思，驱妖箭是消除灾祸的护身符。
在那个时代用弓箭射的射箭板在日文中读做“哈马”。
“哈马” 的读音日文是“破魔”。
这就是破魔弓（驱妖箭）的由来。
类试驱妖箭的东西在新年参拜的神社以及新建造房子的
时候向着鬼大门的方向摆设着。

从古代的时候开始就有正月算命，正月里摆设消灾的仪式。
男孩子用弓和箭射射箭板就表示那个年算过命了，这就是破魔弓（驱妖箭）的起源。
女孩正月打羽毛球，球拍敲打球的声音会驱除灾祸。
这就是羽子板(毽球板)的起源。
