サファイアの神秘的な青い色は、古くから神聖視され、安らぎを与えてくれるものとされ、神の恵みが得られると信じられていました。語源はラテン語の「サフィルス」（青い）に由来しています。濃い青色の輝きのあるものは、「ロイヤル・ブルー」と呼ばれます。ルビーと同じコランダムグループに属し、赤いルビー以外をサファイアといいます。ピンク・サファイアも希少価値があります。
