　ペリドットの語源は、その深い緑色の美しい輝きをはなつ結晶体を意味するギリシャ語から派生しています。中世に遠征から帰った十字軍によってヨーロッパにもたらされ、教会儀式用に使われていました。また、紅海上のセント・ジョン島では3500年にわたって採掘が続けられている等、大変歴史のある宝石です。
