“What is silk?”

Silk is fiber that is made from cocoons of silkworms. Silk consists of protein fiber called “fibroin,” and “sericin” which is surrounding fibroin.
Raw silk just spun off the cocoons is not glossy and has a rough texture. During the weaving process, sericin is removed and it becomes a shiny smooth silk cloth. Since silk has a beautiful shine and also known that it is good for people’s health, it was considered as a valuable fiber from old times.
In the old days, silk industry was very popular in Japan. During Meiji to early Showa era, one of the typical exporting goods from Japan was silk. Mechanization of reeling industry progressed, and Tomioka Silk Mill was built by the government with technology from abroad. It was registered as a World Heritage site recently, so now it is known widely around the world than before.

In addition, the beautiful and glossy silk texture is popular among people in the point of design. Silk is animal fiber and the principal ingredient is amino acid, so it has a higher affinity with human skin. It is also good for people with sensitive skin
